For this iteration of the iconic Bongo 5, Sterling By Music Man’s luthiers spared no effort in selecting a trio of tonewoods that bring heaping low-frequency firepower to your sound. An Indonesian mahogany body functions as this Bongo’s aural anchor, chosen for its robust yet reactive midrange character, alongside its blossoming overtones, healthy dynamic range, and balanced profile. Roasted maple is used in the neck, imbuing your sound with luminous clarity, smoldering warmth, and naturally incisive note-separating capabilities. Up top, the rosewood fretboard enshrines your tone in crystalline presence, with shimmering depth and presence that never gets muddy.
Like its EBMM siblings, the Sterling Bongo 5 pulls no punches in the tone-crafting department. The dual-humbucker array utilizes heavy-duty ceramic magnets to capture every nuance of your finger-played or hard-picked performances, invoking powerful lows, well-defined mids, and transparent highs. Moreover, the active-design 2-band EQ includes a pickup Blend control, allowing you to refine your tone via detailed sonic-contouring capabilities, making studio-to-stage transitions a breeze.
From studio woodshedding to main-stage bass slapping, the SBMM Bongo 5 was built to endure. Its 6-bolt neck plate and sculpted heel provide ultra-stable support for the 24 frets sprawling the instrument’s 34-inch scale and 12-inch radius. The roasted maple neck is teeming with hearty in-hand heft, blending satisfying tactility and speedy satin-finished control. Still, accuracy and access aren’t the only reasons for using roasted maple over a non-roasted tonewood — its increased dimensional stability drastically enhances its resistance to twisting, warping, and further environmental influences, making it the ideal road warrior.
