Boutique Fuzz Design Meets Dunlop’s Iconic Wah Pedal
Fuzz and wah-wah: it’s the effect pairing of choice for any guitarist seeking the wild, psychedelic lead tones of the ’60s and ’70s. It only makes sense to package them both into a single handy stompbox, which is exactly what Daredevil Pedals and Dunlop have done with the Dunlop Cy Baby Daredevil Fuzz Wah pedal. This pedal is one half modded-out Dunlop Crybaby and one half custom vintage-style fuzz, with a convenient side-mounted switch to effortlessly switch between fuzz and fuzz/wah. Moreover, if you’re particular about your fuzz, two internal pots allow you to precisely tune the fuzz’s intensity and level for a slew of soulful setup possibilities. And while each pedal is handbuilt by Dunlop, the Cry Baby Daredevil truly lives up to its boutique roots with premium thru-hole components and a thoroughly old-school aesthetic to match its fierce retro fuzz/wah tone.
Internal controls to dial in your fuzz
Besides the handy baseball bat-style on/off switch for the Cry Baby Daredevil’s fuzz circuit, this pedal’s control scheme comes across as nearly identical to a typical Crybaby from the outset. So, how do you dial in the fuzz circuit? Simply screw off the back plate to access the pedal’s internal pot controls: fuzz intensity and overall output. Having a tool to adjust your fuzz intensity is a no-brainer, but the fuzz circuit’s level pot is deceptively versatile, allowing for a whole slew of different configurations. One of our favorite settings when testing the Cry Baby Daredevil out at AJ’s Music & The Music Man was to set up a particularly gnarly fuzz, then adjust the level just a bit above the pedal’s non-fuzz side. This gives you both funky standard wah for your rhythm parts, with a roaring volume boost when it comes time to lay down a psychedelic, wah-filled fuzzy lead.
Handbuilt with thru-hole components
As a collaboration between Dunlop and Daredevil Pedals, the Cry Baby Daredevil blends the best qualities of the boutique pedal world with Dunlop’s manufacturing might and legacy. The circuit is a thoroughly premium build, handmade by Dunlop with thru-hole components. Moreover, every inch of the Cry Baby Daredevil brandishes an aesthetic elegance, including a vintage crinkle finish base, custom design tread, polished aluminum rocker top, and old-school lightning bolt Wah/Fuzz Wah selector plate.
