Myrtlewood: a thrilling playing experience
Tom Bedell knows tonewoods — and the people who harvest them! Tom spearheaded Breedlove’s 100% sustainability initiative, and he makes it a point to visit the forests, sawmills, and workers that source Breedlove’s materials. With the Tom Bedell Signature Concertina, myrtlewood takes centerstage, and, like Breedlove’s previous myrtlewood creations, the playing experience is downright thrilling. Myrtlewood top, back, and sides respond to the slightest touch with a tone that’s punchy and direct. Myrtlewood’s intense midrange character gives strummed chords a big sound, even on a compact Concertina such as this one. Moreover, myrtlewood’s touch-sensitive response highlights fingerpicking dynamics and rewards thoughtful playing with rich tonal nuances. If you’re not familiar with the sound of myrtlewood yet, give it a go — you won’t be disappointed.
Concertina: a fingerstyle player’s dream
The Concertina is Breedlove’s take on the parlor guitar. It’s the second smallest guitar the company makes, too. Players love the Concertina for its comfortable, compact dimensions and articulate tone. A 25-inch scale length provides a welcoming playing experience, just like the parlor guitars of generations past. Pluck a few notes, and you’ll likely find it a perfect companion for expressive fingerstyle or dynamic strums. The Tom Bedell Signature Concertina Acoustic-electric Guitar also delivers a richer and fuller sound than you’d expect from a guitar of this size, partially due to the crisp tonality of its Eastern hard rock maple neck. The neck’s nimble “Slim C” profile facilitates frictionless trips across an ebony fingerboard with a smoothness unlike any parlor you’ve ever played!
Forward-thinking Sound Optimization process
When Tom Bedell arrived at Breedlove, it wasn’t long before he’d challenged luthiers with an ambitious proposal: Sound Optimization. This data-driven process accounts for the inherent variability in natural tonewoods and ensures every guitar performs to its full potential. So how does it work? First, Breedlove sands each tonewood to a desired weight (most guitar companies sand to a uniform thickness). Once the braces are glued in, the company’s luthiers use soft mallets, microphones, and specialized software to analyze the top and back frequency response. They then voice the braces by hand and constantly re-measure the frequency response to ensure the top and back resonate to pre-determined target frequencies.
Breedlove’s groundbreaking combination of data-backed technology with the art of lutherie ensures that their instruments sound unlike any other. The guitar comes alive the second you pluck your first note. Each Sound Optimized guitar offers a vast dynamic range with striking note separation and clarity. Plus, the sustain is out of this world. Breedlove believes in their Sound Optimization technology so much that no instrument leaves their Oregon workshop until it performs to its full potential — even if that means carving on the bracing through the soundhole. With a Sound Optimized Breedlove guitar, you’ll experience a level of performance and sonic consistency that you can’t find anywhere else. Still on the fence? Just wait until you play one.
Breedlove: guitars you can feel good about
From the company’s beginning in 1990, Breedlove has focused a lot of their efforts on reducing their impact on the planet without compromising the quality of their instruments. Their radical approach to sustainability led them to create their Tonewood Certification Program and commit to visit each location where their timber is harvested to ensure that their sustainability standards are met. The company has introduced player-centered innovations, including top-loading bridges, custom voicings, and unique neck profiles. From the Discovery to the Legacy, each and every Breedlove is made with an uncompromising dedication to quality sound, flawless workmanship, and environmental sustainability. Buying a Breedlove is much more than purchasing a top-notch acoustic guitar — it’s buying a guitar that you can feel good about.
